Human performance · Command · High-consequence work

Dr Anthony Walker

Human performance scientist, international keynote speaker and subject-matter expert for operations where the cost of failure is counted in people.

"I commanded fire crews under real stakes, then built the published research to prove it." One career, both seats: the science and the command.

Where to start

Four ways to put the work to work.

Keynote speaking

Past the Envelope

The international keynote on what command owes the human at the edge of physiological tolerance. 45 to 75 minutes, built for high-consequence operations and high-reliability corporate audiences.

Subject-matter expert

Expert insight and media commentary

Peer-reviewed expertise in heat, fatigue and human performance in mission-critical work, for media, briefings, panels and advisory engagements.

The evidence

Self-authored, published, defensible.

Every figure quoted from the stage comes from Anthony's own peer-reviewed research on firefighters working at the edge of collapse. When a delegate challenges a number, the author is holding the microphone.

38.5°C

The safe limit

The ISO and NFPA core-temperature limit. In Anthony's heat-chamber study of 77 firefighters, the average crew member passed it by the second work bout; 30 went beyond 39°C.

A false signal

The body lies

During rest, skin temperature and perceived effort dropped while core temperature kept rising. The feeling of having recovered arrives exactly when the body is most dangerous.

24 hours

The danger persists

After repeated heat exposure, heart rates reached 90.9% of maximum and platelet counts stayed elevated for a full day, compounding across multi-day deployments.

About Anthony

He measured the edge, then had to command across it.

Dr Anthony Walker fought structural fires and commanded crews through 40°C-plus Canberra summers, earning a PhD in thermal physiology while still operational and placing core-temperature sensors inside his own crews. A Churchill Fellow with thirty-seven peer-reviewed publications, he has directed risk across an eighty-billion-dollar Defence program and now leads Optimised Human Performance, the consulting practice behind the keynote. He is a member of the national advisory board of Tactical and Occupational Performance Australia and an advocate for stronger heat and fatigue protection for frontline workers.
